In a way, this infamous, purely nonsensical line once uttered by Alfred Jarry perfectly describes the films featured in this section of the festival. On the one hand, Poland “leads” the way when it comes to high levels of social and political homophobia in Europe. A great illustration of this is Monika Bryk’s film, “We Are People”, which opens this section. On the other hand, Polish queer culture – in the broad sense of the term – is teeming with innovative and experimental ideas and activities that evade easy classifications and labels. They definitely deserve our attention, and so we should have a closer look at them. Seemingly affirmative, poetic and inquisitive, they also show us what lurks beneath the surface of a reality that is not entirely tamed.
